Demonstration

(Whole Class, 5 Minutes)

  • Instructor demonstrates commanding a robot using EV3 Programmer App.

  • ​Instructor demonstrates the ease of programming the robot using drag and drop.

Overview

(Small Groups, 5 Minutes)

  • Instructors provides an overview of LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Technology.

  • ​Students learn what they need to get started.

EV3 Technology

(Whole Class, 5 Minutes)

  • Introduce the programmable intelligent EV3 Brick.

    • Motors and Sensors

  • Connect EV3 Brick to build robots.

  • ​Connect EV3 Brick to a laptop or tablet.

  • Learn EV3 Brick Interface various functions and settings.

EV3 Software

(Whole Class, 15 Minutes)

  • Introduce the computer-based (laptop) EV3 Software including installation.

  • Tutorial on programming an EV3 Brick.

EV3 Programmer App

(Whole Class, 35 Minutes)

  • Introduce the various features and functions of the tablet-based EV3 Programmer App.

  • Students learn and practice coding the EV3 Brick.

  • Students practice connecting EV3 Bricks to build a robot.

Evaluate

(Ongoing Throughout the Lesson)

  • Ask guiding questions to encourage students to "think aloud" and explain their thought processes and reasoning in the decisions they've made while building and programming.

Self-Assessment

  • Have each student select a statement that they feel best represents their performance.

    • I think I can modify a solution to fix it.

    • I can modify a solution to fix it.

    • I can modify a solution to fix it, and I can help a friend do it too.

Peer-Feedback

  • In small groups, will discuss their experiences working together.

  • Encourage them to use statements like these:
